Geographical Location
Qingdao is located on the north-eastern coast of China - about 650km south-east of Beijing (approximately 3~5 hours by fast speed train, and 1.5 hours by plane), 700km north of Shanghai and 600km west of Seoul, South Korea. Qingdao is the largest city in Shandong province with a total population of more than 9 million people. The greater Qingdao occupies a total land area of more than 10k square kilometres with an urban area of 1.1k square kilometres.
October Weather
Early to mid-October is typically the busiest tourist season in Qingdao with its pleasant autumn weather. The average temperature is around 20oC during the daytime and around 14oC at night. October is the dry season in Qingdao where the chance of rain is less than 10%.
Lightweight clothing such as t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, light trousers and light jackets is recommended for daytime outings in Qingdao during the season. A slightly warmer jacket may be needed in the evening.
Timezone
Qingdao shares the Beijing Standard Time which is 8 hours ahead of GMT (GMT/UTC +8 hours). The sunrise in October is around 6 am and sunset at 5:30 pm.
Public Transport
As one of the major transportation hubs in north-eastern China, Qingdao has a well-established public transportation system with subways, buses and ferries providing frequent and very affordable services in and around the city.
Qingdao has four high speed train stations including Qingdao, Qingdao North, Qingdao West and Qingdao Airport stations. Qingdao Airport station is directly integrated with the new Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport terminal, which hopefully can be ready to welcome the conference participants by the time. The new airport is one of the biggest airports in China which has nearly 500k square metres in the terminal building area. The airport is located about 40 km away from the city centre.
Currency
Chinese Yuan (¥) is the Chinese official currency, which is comprised of ¥5, ¥10, ¥20, ¥50 and ¥100 notes and smaller coins. Tipping isn't mandatory and service charges are generally not applied in China, however for good service, tipping is always welcomed.
